Good and evil. To Xame, the same. It’s all about survival and then getting ahead. The so-called evil are simply those who take their advantages immediately, whereas the self-righteous are those who impose their wills through self-serving organizations and codes of conduct. Everyone was in it for themselves. No help is ever to be expected or received from anyone other himself. So it had been, and so Xame believed it would always be, until that fateful night when everything was no longer the same. After a particularly bad lift from a merchant at the tavern, and a particularly bad attempt to elude the town watch, Xame found himself in cuffs and marched towards the nearest petty dungeon.

A voice then called to him… he quickly realized it wasn’t being project into his mind, but rather whispered to his ear by an invisible being. “Do you wish your freedom?”

Relatively confident that he was not one to have delusions in times of crisis, Xame subtly nodded his head as he was continued to be marched by guards.

“My gift does not come free, however. You have potential in you… so much potential, of so many different types. You could be this world’s pinnacle marksman, or the most feared assassin, or even the most revered of monks… provided that you have your life and freedom. But, entertain one last possibility: You could be my champion. I don’t ask much, only that you turn your peers of similar inclination to me; I have little need of respect from the ignorant masses. In exchange, I allow you access to powers you have only gleamed in passing previously, and will do nothing to prevent you from honing your other skills. And, of course, I will free you from your current predicament.”

Xame nodded his head again, and quickly found himself invisible, while the guards continued to escort an image of himself. The voice chuckled. “You’ll learn that trick in time. I go for now, but you will gain your first taste of power on your 18th birthday, two months from now.”

Player’s Notes:

Xame is meant to be a defensive nightmare. With the racial +1 to all saving throws, plus the rogue 1/cleric X build to good saves in everything, plus Lightning Reflexes feat at level 1, I fully expect Xame to be capable of making just about every single saving throw, especially with the Action Points considerations. Additionally, I planned Luck and Celerity as my two domains, and Tumble as my strong skill, which makes for extremely high mobility and retreat should always not be difficult.

The one danger Xame faces more than anything else is grappling. With small size compounded with extremely low strength, Xame is more or less screwed once an opponent gets him into a grapple. Thus, a ring of freedom of movement will be a big item on Xame’s wishlist, despite the fact that it won’t be attainable for quite a while. In the meantime, thankfully Mike took Improved Grappling, so hopefully he can come to Xame’s rescue if needed.

One problem with this is that I didn’t know we were playing in Eberron when I wrote this backstory, and planned for the deity to be Olidammara. In Eberron, the equivalent is the Traveler though, one of the Dark Six. I still haven’t fully resolved this yet; Xame has been claiming to serve Olladra, but it might be an interesting twist for the others to eventually find out he’s serving the Traveler. Or maybe not.
